Hear the stories behind the paintings in the exhibit, The Soul of Moravia: Joža Uprka Reprised: Where they were found across the world, how one of the paintings was stolen from a Jewish family by Nazis, and the themes Uprka expressed.
Joža Uprka (1861–1940), a Czech painter, often called the “Artist of the Moravian Soul,” blended academic technique with Impressionist influences to immortalize the customs and folk dress of his native region. Uprka is known for his richly detailed depictions of Moravian folklore, rural life, and spiritual traditions at the turn of the 20th century. Learn about his life, inspirations, and more from the holder of the largest collection of Uprka’s work in the United States.
George Drost is the dedicated curator behind the Uprka In America collection, part of which is on exhibit at NCSML. With deep roots in Moravian heritage, he has spent years championing the art and cultural history of the Czech Republic. His passion lies in preserving the authentic voices of Czech and Moravian artists — painters whose work captures the spirit, struggles, and traditions of their time. George’s commitment to sharing these stories has made this collection a vibrant tribute to the enduring beauty and significance of Czech art.
