On Sunday, June 28 a reception was held celebrating the arrival of iconic symbols of Czech history and heritage. Guests had the opportunity to view the replica jewels up close, learn about their significance and symbolism, and enjoy music by Iowa Accordion Club.

The replica crown jewels were generously gifted to NCSML in honor of M. Melvina Svec, whose dedication to the formation and growth of the Skala Bartizal Library has left a lasting impact on the community. Another NCSML founder, Bob Schaffer, and his mother commissioned the piece with the permission of the National Museum in Prague in the early ’90s from jewelry exporter Jablonex, based in Jablonec nad Nisou, Czechoslovakia.

The Crown Jewels of Bohemia are among the most treasured artifacts in the Czech Republic and are rarely displayed. The authentic crown, weighing nearly 5.5 pounds and housed in the Prague Castle complex, is made from 22-carat gold, adorned with four fleurs-de-lis and set with 91 precious stones, including sapphires, spinels, emeralds, and rubies, alongside 20 pearls.
